5 reasons to go on a yoga day retreat.

Book a yoga day retreat

What do the words ‘yoga day retreat’ bring up for you? Peace? Tranquility? A deeper sense of connection and belonging? Read on for my top 5 reasons to gift yourself a yoga day retreat.

How many times have you mulled over the idea of booking a yoga day retreat? Hands up - I know for me, the answer is a lot.

Because while yoga classes offer us a dreamy escape from daily life - a chance to look inwards and surrender to movement and rest - sometimes we want MORE.

MORE time to explore new concepts. MORE space to pause. MORE opportunities to reflect and peel back the layers on your practice.

But, let’s face it… Things get in the way. Maybe a retreat catches our attention, but then our to do list draws it away again. Or guilt over prioritising a day purely for ourselves creeps in. You know. All the good stuff.

So, if you need a tad more convincing, read on for my top 5 reasons 2023 could be the year for you to finally attend that yoga day retreat.

1. A yoga day retreat will help you relax and renew (on a whole new level).

You know that feeling that you get following a particularly glorious savasana? Multiply that by ten. Following a yoga full day retreat, you will feel totally reinvigorated.

Making time for yourself is enormously important, especially when living within a society built on moving further and faster. It isn’t always possible to hit the brakes as often as we would like, so dedicating an entire day to let go, indulge and surrender is very, very special.

One of the (many) great things about a day retreat, is you can take way more time with everything. The teacher will take things that extra mile to ensure you leave a far more relaxed person than the one who arrived.

2. You get to explore practices that you might not get to cover in a class.

There’s a reason why so many teachers LOVE teaching day retreats - they get to get their nerd on with the practices and subjects that really light them up.

Most yoga classes are 60 minutes long. There’s a finite amount that you can cover in that time. With a yoga day retreat, you can flow through different types of yoga (anyone fancy with delicious restorative with LOTS of hands on assists?), rest into yoga nidra, take exploratory meditations and perhaps even try asanas that you’ve always wanted to play around with, but were never able to move through them in a mixed level class.

A yoga day retreat will be super tailored to the people in the room and what they want (and need) to get out of the day.

3. Day retreats weave in other creative practices.

Some yoga day retreats will also thread in different creative and complimentary practices. These could include:

  • Journaling

  • Storytelling

  • Painting

  • Poetry

  • Creative writing

  • Dance

  • Doodling

Typically, your yoga day retreat will have a theme that the entire experience is built around. If creativity is your jam - or, maybe, you’ve wanted to dip your toe into some new creative outlets - then a day retreat could be the perfect place to take that next step.

4. They’re less expensive than a residential retreat, but still deeply healing and illuminating.

Of course, I would LOVE to spend all day every day on glorious retreats in beachside studios, treehouses in the forest and beautiful homes in the countryside. I would also love to have an endless supply of $$.

Day retreats offer a less expensive alternative while still promising a healing, transformative and illuminating experience. They are a wonderful gift for a loved one (or for yourself!) and can be dotted throughout the year to have moments of joy and inspiration to look forward to.

5. Yoga day retreats take a headfirst dive into inspiring and intriguing topics.

You know when I said about yoga teachers getting their geek on? The same can AB-SO-LUTELY be said for the subject that your yoga day retreat will be built around.

Yoga teachers are typically a passionate bunch. And we all have different topics that excite us. If you can relate, chances are that there’s a day retreat out there centred around your Mastermind specialised subject.

Whether this relates to mythology or the Wheel of the Year, the lunar cycle or the elements of nature, spend some time seeking out people and practices that bring your interests to life. And if you can’t find one? Why not ask your favourite yoga teacher if they’ve ever considered hosting a day retreat on the topic? You may be surprised by how grateful they are of the idea!
